This year, the Bega Valley Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Committee collected 25 statements from Bega Valley Community members, men and women from all walks of life, calling on all of us to do our part to stop Gender-Based Violence.
For thousands of women, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. Nearly one in three women experience violence in their lifetime. Girls are at particular risk of violence: 1 in 4 adolescent girls is abused by their partners.
Femicide (or feminicide) is the intentional killing of a women or girl because of her gender. It is a universal problem, and the most brutal, visible, and extreme manifestation of the cycle of gender-based violence that women and girls endure.
What is the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence?
The 16 Days of Activism is an annual global campaign that begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs through December 10, Human Rights Day. This campaign, initiated in 1991 during the Women’s Global Leadership Institute, mobilises individuals and organisations worldwide to advocate for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
Bega Valley Community Involvement
As part of this campaign, we collected brief audio statements from local Bega Valley community members to raise awareness about domestic, family, and sexual violence. These recordings aim to amplify the call to end violence against women and girls and violence in general.
